Top Tips For Tracing Your Family History

July 19, 2023

Tracing a family tree can be fun, emotional and educational. It is easier than ever before to begin researching your family tree and find out who your ancestors are. With a wealth of family history resources at our fingertips with the likes of Google, social media and family tree websites, more of us are opting to discover our roots.

Here we look at some top tips for tracing your family tree in 2023.

Make Some Notes

This may seem like the obvious first step, but writing down anything you know that may be useful is a great place to start. This includes any family members you know and where they may have been born. Include parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. List names and birthdates if known. Then you can contact everyone on the list and ask them for any other information they may have.

Official Records

Birth, marriage, death, and military records are all relatively easy to find. Use the family information you have to find official records for further information about your family tree. Records can unearth previous names you were unaware of, opening a whole new branch for the family tree. Censuses record birthplaces, job titles and names of any cohabitant, so another potential avenue to pursue. Educational, migration and crime records can also prove fruitful.

Map Out Your Family Tree

Once you have as much information as possible, it’s time to build that family tree. You can include photos, documents and letters – anything that is relevant. This can be done by hand or online. It is important to remember that you will likely be adding to this and editing it, so digital versions will be a lot more user-friendly.

Update the Tree

You have an impressive family tree for interest facts – what now? You should continue to search for relevant information and edit your family tree accordingly. It would be a shame to see your efforts go to waste, so be sure to keep it up. New information could come to light at any time. Be sure to share the family tree with any living blood relatives. Records are updated constantly, so further information may well become available.

Building a family tree is not as daunting as it may seem and can be extremely rewarding for you and your family. It could bring you closer together, and you may even find new family members to form a bond with.
